Pitt Football is Going Places

University of Pittsburgh football at the new Heinz Stadium.
Credit: University of Pittsburgh
We filmed last week's show on Comcast On Demand (Your Town - Local Sports Folder) from Pitt's Hall of Fame Room at their practice facility on Pittsburgh's Southside.

Are you ready for some GREAT PITT FOOTBALL? WE ARE!Well, check out our interviews with Pitt Head Coach Dave Wannstedt here, Defensive Line Coach Greg Gattuso here and Pitt QB Tyler Palko here! These HOMETOWN PITTSBURGH guys sure seem to have Pitt Football heading in the right direction! And, with the way some of these kids are playing and with these great recruiting classes they're having, Pitt's HOF room may need to put on an addition!

Hey, after beating Cincinnati and Virginia we sure hope Pitt puts a good old fashioned Big East smackdown on the Big Ten's Michigan State this week and gets to 3-0!

Let's Go Pitt! Let's Go Pitt!

Wolf's Fish Fry Wrap-up

The wrap-up on the Miami game is pretty simple. Bang away until the rock crumbles. And that rock came in the formidable form of the Dolphin NT Keith Traylor. Traylor might be a biscuit under 350 pounds, but at the age of 36 or so, he still can move it.

Wes Welker? Are you kidding me? When you talk pre-game about Miami's offensive threats and throwing around names like Chris Chambers, Marty Booker, and Randy McMichael (not too mention Ronnie Brown and the guy chucking the ball), did the name Wes Welker get thrown in there? Hope you had him in your fantasy league.

Joey Porter's knee is looking mighty good to me. Nice athleticism on that int. (yes, my 21-17 prognostication was right on the money right up until about 3 minutes left in the game - that's cool though - loved JP's int., run and big smooch!). Yes, that was a kiss he laid on Bill Cowher after the TD, maybe Joey is trying to soften his image as the NFL's most feared defender. But I dare you to tease him about it!

Aaron Smith owned Vernon Carey (the OT on his side). There's no better 3-4 end in the business than this guy. Told you he could get the inside on Carey.

Charlie Batch is one of the coolest cats walking the planet. All that pressure, and him being a hometown guy and all. Just can't say enough about how he handles it.

Willie Parker gets from here to there faster than any Steeler in recent memory. His patience in waiting for the hole to develop has gotten to the point that after the game he told me he was too patient on a coupl'a runs!

Good start, next up Jacksonville!

Win Lunch on Tunch and Wolf

Hey Steeler fans, we bet that you're hungry for some football! Tonight's the night - Steelers home opener at Heinz Field!

And, you can safely bet, that we're just plain hungry!

So, here's the deal - email us at lockerroom@tunchandwolf.com with your prediction for the final score of tonight's Steeler/Dolphins game and you'll win lunch on us at Score's Pizza & Wings in Robinson Township ONLY if you're the first to post and closest to the final score.

You can bring a guest and have lunch on and with us at Score's sometime in the very near future!

Good luck!

Wolf's Fishing Report

If you're kicking back and having a little snackeration (yes, my word!) as you prop yourself up in your Lazy Boy chair in preparation for tonight's match-up...you might want to look for this.

Jason Taylor will tip you off to whatever skullduggery is a foot from the Fish...it's a 3-4 when he's a knuckledragger up on two feet, and a 4-3 configuration when he puts his paw on the ground in a three point stance. He'll move around too, so both Big Max and Marvel will have a go with Taylor.

Why is that important? The Steelers have to account for this guy in pass situations so they don't get the 'ol big guy on a little guy scenario and Charlie's eating dirt.

Identifying the front and communicating that info from Charlie to Center Jeff Hartings and the rest of the hogs will be huge.

This is an aging unit up front. NT Keith Traylor is a 16 year guy, E Kevin Carter 12 years. Vonnie Holliday checks in with 9 years of service and Taylor 10.

Putting the hammer down is where the Steelers must go. Run, run, and run again because the old guys have a tendency to show their age as the game goes on if the Steelers have enough physicality Yes, my word again!) in the trench warfare.

And don't forget...chicken wings and football are a great combo...make sure to lay in an adequate supply of Blue Cheese!

P.S.: You heard it here first - Steelers win tonight by the score of 21-17!

Shoe Fits for Marbury

Caught an interesting story in Forbes (yes, we read other things than sports pages) about $15 sneakers endorsed and to be worn on game days by NBA player and New York Knicks star guard Stephon Marbury. Mr. Marbury hasn't been the best teammate or role model to ever grace the hard court, but we're always willing to give people a fair chance to change their game. We hope his big step with this new shoe - making them more affordable to young kids - leads to more improved steps by him other athletes who have so much, to be life-time game-changers and help make the world a better place.

Pitt QB Tyler Palko

Photo credit: Steve Mellon, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

We knew all about Tyler Palko's incredible high school career at West Allegheny and the legacy he's building as Pitt's QB. However, we did not know about his commendable community activities especially with regard to his work in helping find a cure for people with Down syndrome and we've both become even bigger fans!

Here's a great story about Tyler and his hometown buddy Chris McGough, "Friends for Life: The story of a big-time QB and a boy with Down syndrome" and here's a link to his recent interview with us talking about Pitt Football, the rhetoric commentaries of Quintillian vs. Plato and Chris.

It's easy to understand why Tyler Palko is "Tunch and Wolf's Locker Room Leader" (sponsored by Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge) for this week. What a fine young man and a terrific leader on and off the field. He's a credit to his family, to Pitt, and to his hometown of West Allegheny.

PITT IS IT

We're excited about the progress Pitt's Football Team has made under Coach Dave Wannstedt and looking forward to its future success.

In fact, we're so excited that we filmed this week's entire show at Pitt's really cool Hall of Fame room at their practice facility in the Southside of Pittsburgh.

Our guests included Coach Wannstedt, Pitt QB Tyler Palko, Defensive Line Coach Greg Gattuso and Head Athletic Trainer Rob Blanc.

Many thanks to Pitt's Assistant AD for Media Relations E.J. Borghetti for coordinating all of our guest appearances. E.J. is one of the best in the business and a great friend of our Show.

Check out our Show out this week on Comcast's CN8 channel at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday or later in On Demand - Local Sports Folder and check back here for some clips from the show later in the week.

Bishop Canevin Coach Bob Jacoby

Here's a link to a recent interview we had with Bishop Canevin High School's Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Bob Jacoby and a winner of our Locker Room Leader Award.

As their school motto goes, Coach Jacoby has been "inspiring good kids to be great" for more than 34 years and at 196 career wins, he is closing in on 200 this season a head coach.

He's a great guy and great example of a Locker Room Leader.

The Best Things About a Boring NFL Game

Omar Jacobs got an opportunity, and he took an advantage of an opportunity. The million dollar smile he was sporting after the game spoke to a confidence he was feeling that was missing a week ago. This young man dug deep to produce a performance that I wasn't sure he was capable of.

Anthony Smith continues to beat people up in the secondary.

Mike Logan needs to be on this team. He makes too many plays as a safety and a special teamer to be jobless.

Chukky Okobi was the same height after the game as he was before the game. His return from serious neck surgery which only took about 10 days to heal was a testament to God's healing graces and the expertise of Dr. Joe Maroone.

Who's gonna be on the outs at linebacker? Good performances by Goo Wallace, Richard Siegler, Arnold Harrison, and Andre Frazier leaves this as a very talented group that will be missing a coupla' guys come Monday.

Duce Staley showed the spark that has been missing on the field. He's still got it.

Ricardo Colclough made a bonehead play, but that cat was all over the field like Batman on Fat Tuesday in Gotham City.

Walter Young made some plays. If only this young man had just a little bit more quickness, he could do some damage with that body. You can get away with a little less speed if you got the quicks. But not the other way around. And no, they are not the same thing.

Casey Hampton had a hard time not going over the wall and digging into some ribs they were selling at the Ribfest. They don't call him "Big Snack" for nothing.

It didn't rain.

It didn't go into overtime (thank you Jeff Reed).

It was the last pre-season game!
